Biography

Prof Phil Warwick is a Professor of Radioanalytical Chemistry at the University of Southampton, where he also serves as the director of a commercial radioanalytical consultancy laboratory and directs the NNUF – EXACT facility. With over 30 years of experience in commercial radioanalytical operations and research, he has worked closely with the nuclear industry, government agencies, and academic sectors. He began his career at UKAEA Winfrith before moving to the University of Southampton in 1994, where he spent two years contracted to the Environment Agency for environmental monitoring programs across England and Wales. His research interests encompass analytical radiochemistry, mass spectrometric analysis of radionuclides, and the dispersion of radionuclides and heavy metals in marine and coastal environments. He also focuses on the application of radiotracers in environmental process studies, nuclear forensics, nuclear waste characterization, and remediation. His contributions to research include the development of novel extractants and adsorbents, techniques for quantifying difficult-to-measure radionuclides, and advancements in nuclear waste characterization techniques. He has also been actively involved in the automation of in-situ and online radionuclide sensors and the remediation of radiologically contaminated land. Prof Warwick is the Commissioning Editor for the Elsevier journal ‘Applied Radiation & Isotopes’ and is a member of working groups at the International Standards Organisation.
