Biography

Phong Tran is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Developmental Biology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Biophysics at the University of California – Berkeley in 1991 and obtained his Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill in 1998. His research focuses on the cytoskeleton and cellular pattern formation, exploring how cell polarity and cell division are orchestrated by the cytoskeleton. Tran's studies involve utilizing fission yeast as a model organism to investigate the roles of microtubules in directing polarized cell growth and organizing mitotic spindles for chromosome segregation. His long-term goals include identifying molecular components pathways related to cell shape and division and applying advanced imaging techniques and microfluidics to both yeast and mammalian cell systems. Tran has contributed to research on spindle mechanics and organelle dynamics, further advancing our understanding of cellular architecture.
