Biography

Phuong Loan Nguyen is a Research Associate at the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, specializing in climate science. She obtained her PhD in Climate Science from UNSW Sydney in 2023. Prior to that, she earned her Master of Environmental Science from Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea in 2018, and her Bachelor of Environmental Science from Vietnam National University in 2014. Her research focuses on understanding the current state-of-the-art in regional climate modeling simulations, capturing observed variability and changes in precipitation extremes, and addressing the limitations of current models, such as parameterization schemes. She applies a benchmarking framework that includes observational uncertainty and a process-based understanding of regional domains worldwide to tackle common modeling limitations. Nguyen is planning to perform simulations to address key research questions related to her projects, with the ultimate goal of identifying model failings to inform and enhance decision-making processes in regional climate modeling.
