Phyllis Hanson is the Minor J. Coon Collegiate Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University before completing her MD and PhD at Stanford University. Dr. Hanson has focused her research on the investigation of calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII) and the role of membranes, organelles, and proteins in cellular regulation. Prior to her appointment at Michigan in 2018, she was the Gerty T. Cori Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at Washington University in St. Louis. In her current role, she leads a dynamic collaborative department, has developed a course on organelle membrane biology, and actively contributes to various institutional committees. Notably, she co-chairs Michigan Medicine’s Endowment for Basic Sciences. Her national leadership includes chairing the 2024 Gordon Research Conference on Lysosomes & Endocytosis, serving on NIH review panels, and being an Associate Editor for the Journal of Biological Chemistry. As a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, her research has been extensively funded by NIH and other disease-focused foundations, focusing on membrane regulation and its implications in human disease.
Admission for Biological Chemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Human Genetics, Microbiology and Immunology, Pharmacology, Molecular and Integrative Physiology, Cancer Biology, and Neuroscience is primary handled through the PIBS (Program in Biomedical Sciences) gateway.
