Biography

Pia Mauro is an Assistant Professor in Epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. She is also the Co-Director of the Substance Use Epidemiology Unit. Her research primarily focuses on the multi-level drivers of substance use and mental health treatment access through a health equity lens. Mauro is currently the Principal Investigator of a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) R01 project that investigates how community-level exposure to the criminal legal system contributes to inequities in substance use treatment availability, use, and outcomes. She has received the NIDA K01 Career Development Award for her work on the unintended spillover effects of changing cannabis laws on substance use disorder treatment outcomes. Additionally, she has presented her work to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee on Public Health Consequences of Changes to the Cannabis Policy Landscape. Mauro has published over 75 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals such as JAMA Network Open, Drug Alcohol Dependence, and The Lancet Public Health, focusing on critical issues like the low uptake of medication for opioid use disorder and the increasing substance use among middle-aged and older adults. Her work has been recognized with the Calderone Award for Junior Faculty Development at Columbia University, and her research findings have been widely cited in policy documents and reported in media outlets including The New York Times and Forbes.
