Biography

Pierre Berini received his PhD and MScA in electrical engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal, Canada, and his B.E.Sc. and B.Sc. in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. He is a Distinguished University Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Nanophotonics at the University of Ottawa, where he also serves as the director of the Centre for Research in Photonics and founding director of the uOttawa NanoFab, a core facility housing $30 million in cleanroom tools. Berini is a co-founder and chief technology officer of a venture capital-financed company, collaborating regularly with industry. He has received numerous awards, including the NSERC Steacie Fellowship, NSERC Discovery Accelerator, Premier Ontario Research Excellence Award, and the University of Ottawa Young Researcher of the Year Award. A fellow of multiple prestigious organizations, he has published 14 book chapters and over 700 scientific and technical papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. His research interests focus on nanophotonics in telecom, quantum devices, and applications in (bio)sensing.
