Biography

Pierre R. Demarque (1932 - 2025) was a distinguished Munson Professor Emeritus of Astronomy at Yale University. He served as the chair of the astronomy department starting in 1968 and held this position until 1975, during which he shifted the department's focus toward astrophysics, establishing it as a leading international center in the field. His research primarily centered around the structure and evolution of stars, the ages and evolution of galaxies, as well as solar stellar astrophysics. In 1979, he was named Munson Professor and later, in 1985, became the director of Yale's Center for Solar Space Research. Throughout his prolific career, Demarque received numerous accolades, including the 1967 Warner Prize from the American Astronomical Society. He also served as president of the International Astronomical Union’s Commission on Internal Constitution of Stars from 1991 to 1994 and was recognized as a fellow by both the Royal Astronomical Society in London and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
