Pierre Fontana obtained his medical degree from the University of Lausanne in 1994, followed by a doctorate in medicine in 2000, and a doctorate in sciences from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Paris V in 2003. He also achieved FMH specialist titles in internal medicine in 2004 and angiology in 2006. He joined the angiography and hemostasis service at the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) in 2002 and progressively became a scientific clinical chief, then an associate physician, and head of the hemostasis laboratory. Promoted to private docent at the Faculty of Medicine in 2009, he was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine Specialties in 2014, and gained full professor status in October 2017. His research focuses on platelet function and he has received multiple awards, including the Leenaards Prize in 2007. He is also a co-founder of the Geneva Platelet Group, which aims to promote translational research on platelet function and antiplatelet medications by bringing together specialists from both clinical and fundamental research as well as epidemiologists.
