Dr. Pierre Lermusiaux

Biography

Professor Pierre Lermusiaux is the Nam P. Suh Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received his engineering degree from the University of Liège in 1992, followed by a Master of Science from Harvard University in 1993 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1997. Lermusiaux's research interests are primarily centered around Ocean Data Assimilation, Numerical Ocean Modeling, Uncertainty Quantification, and Machine Learning Applications in Ocean Dynamics Engineering. He has made significant contributions in data assimilation and ocean modeling, focusing on the prediction and understanding of complex physical interdisciplinary oceanic dynamics processes. Over the years, he has been awarded numerous prestigious fellowships and honors, including the Fulbright Foundation Fellowship and the Wallace Prize from Harvard. Lermusiaux has published more than 120 refereed publications in scientific journals and served as an associate editor for various journals. He is an active member of several professional societies, including the American Geophysical Union and the Oceanography Society. His research work has implications for autonomous ocean systems, and he has participated in numerous national and international sea exercises, providing critical insights into marine systems. Professor Lermusiaux continues to teach and mentor students at MIT, fostering a new generation of engineers in the field of ocean science.
