After completing undergraduate studies in physics and a Master's degree in operating systems at McGill University, Pierre McKenzie spent a year traveling the world. He began his programming career in Australia in 1978, where he attended a lecture in computer science given by Steve Cook, an influential figure in computational theory. Upon returning to Canada, he enrolled in a doctorate program at the University of Toronto to further explore operating systems. Five years later, he completed his Ph.D. in computational complexity under the supervision of Allan Borodin and Steve Cook, the inventor of NP-completeness. Pierre has been a faculty member at the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research (DIRO) since 1984, apart from a year at the University of British Columbia and another at the University of Tübingen. Between 2001 and 2005, he served as the director of DIRO, contributing significantly to the department's direction and focus.
