Biography

Pierre Schaus is an Associate Professor at UCLouvain, specializing in Constraint Programming and Discrete Optimization. He obtained his Master's degree in Engineering (Computer Science) from UCLouvain in 2005 and completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science there in 2009 under the supervision of Yves Deville. His dissertation focused on balancing fairness in global constraints using Constraint Programming and Bin Packing. Following his doctoral studies, Schaus collaborated with distinguished colleagues such as Jean-Charles Régin and Pierre Dupont. He spent five months at Brown University working with Pascal Van Hentenryck on the CP solver Comet, after which he joined the startup Dynadec, which aimed to commercialize Comet. Schaus returned to UCLouvain in 2012 and has since led the development of the OscaR solver. His current research interests include decision-diagram-based optimization, algorithms for machine learning, and various collaborations that support industrial optimization projects across scheduling, routing, and configuration. Over the years, he has successfully supervised 15 Ph.D. students and maintains active research collaborations, particularly focused on developing novel algorithms and models in optimization and machine learning.
