Biography

Piet van Eeuwijk has served as an external lecturer at the Ethnological Seminar, University of Zurich since 1997. Since 2017, he has been a Research Associate at the same institution. His academic journey includes a degree in History and Ethnology from the University of Basel (1985) and postgraduate studies in development aid at ETH Zurich (1988). He received his PhD in Ethnology from the University of Basel in 1997 and completed his habilitation in Ethnology at the University of Zurich in 2018. van Eeuwijk has held postdoctoral positions in Brisbane, Australia, and Leiden, the Netherlands, and has taught at several universities including Zurich, Basel, Bern, Freiburg, Heidelberg, and in Indonesia. Since 2000, he has been a scientific staff member at the Ethnological Seminar, University of Basel, and from 2013, he has led projects at the Swiss Tropical Public Health Institute, University of Basel. His research interests include aging, health transitions, and the impact of chronic and neglected tropical diseases, with a specific focus on Southeast Asia and East Africa. He has significant involvement in international and interdisciplinary research projects.
