Dr. Piet Van Mieghem

Biography

Piet Van Mieghem is a professor at Delft University of Technology, leading a chair in telecommunication networks and serving as chairman of the section on Network Architectures and Services. His primary research focuses on modeling and analyzing complex networks, including infrastructural, biological, brain, and social networks, as well as developing new Internet-like architectures and algorithms for future communication networks. His work has significantly broadened the scope of telecommunication networks to encompass Network Science. He has held various influential roles, including serving on the board of the Netherlands Platform of Complex Systems, as a steering committee member of the Dutch Network Science Society, and as an external faculty member at the Institute for Advanced Study of the University of Amsterdam. An IEEE Fellow, he has received notable grants such as the Advanced ERC grant in 2020 for his project on Virus Spread Networks. With a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from K.U. Leuven in Belgium, where he graduated with high honors, he has previously worked at the Interuniversity Micro Electronic Center and engaged in performance analysis at Alcatel Corporate Research Center. Piet has also visited prestigious institutions like MIT, UCLA, Cornell University, Stanford University, and Princeton University as a guest professor and researcher.
