Pieter Bruijnincx obtained his Master’s degree in 2002 and Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2007 from Utrecht University, both with cum laude honors. His doctoral studies, supervised by Profs. Bert Klein Gebbink, Gerard van Koten, and Bert Weckhuysen, focused on the development of bio-inspired oxidation catalysts based on non-heme iron enzymes. Following his PhD, he was awarded the NWO Rubicon grant in 2007 and conducted research in the medicinal inorganic chemistry group led by Prof. Peter Sadler at the University of Warwick, U.K., specializing in catalytic drug development. Back at Utrecht in 2009, he joined the Inorganic Chemistry & Catalysis group as a tenure-track assistant professor, working on catalytic conversion of biomass into renewable bulk and fine chemicals. Bruijnincx was granted tenure in 2013 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Catalysis in Renewables in 2015. In 2018, he was appointed Full Professor, holding the chair in Sustainable Chemistry & Catalysis at the Organic Chemistry & Catalysis group, Debye Institute of Nanomaterials Science. His research encompasses designing and characterizing new catalysts for sustainable production processes, exploring routes like the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass and CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels, as well as investigating catalyst stability and mechanistic aspects of reactions.
