Pieter Doevendans became a cardiologist in Maastricht, trained under H. Wellens, after completing his medical training at Leiden University. In 1993-1994, he had the opportunity to work with Ken Chien at the University of California, San Diego, focusing on embryonic stem cells. This experience formed the basis of his thesis on the function of the promoter of the atrial Myosin Light Chain gene. After returning to the Netherlands, he worked with Christine Mummery and Hans Clevers on human embryonic and human cardiac stem cells. Meanwhile, he remained active as an interventional cardiologist, initially in Maastricht and then at UMC Utrecht in 2002, where he was appointed a full professor in Translational Cardiology in 2004 and became head of the department in 2005. His research interests include inherited heart disease, cardiac repair, regeneration, and the molecular sciences and therapy for heart failure. He aims to enhance the lives of patients and families impacted by inherited cardiomyopathies by identifying gene variants, understanding disease mechanisms, and developing new therapeutic strategies.
