Biography

Pieter Huistra is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University in the Department of History and Art History. His research spans the history of science in its broadest sense, covering fields within the humanities, biomedical, and natural sciences. In 2013, he defended his PhD thesis focused on Dutch historiography of the nineteenth century, which was published at Vantilt in Nijmegen. His research interests have since evolved towards the history of anatomy in Belgium during the nineteenth century and the work of travelling scientists in the twentieth century. Huistra's work integrates historiography and philosophy of history, emphasizing the relationship between teaching and research. He teaches courses that include Theory of History and Introduction to the Study of History. His current research centers on historical epistemology, investigating how historical knowledge is validated and exploring the influence of twentieth-century scientific institutions on shaping the infrastructure, practices, and content of science.
