Biography

Pieter Leroy graduated in sociology from the Catholic University of Leuven between 1972 and 1976 and worked as a researcher at the University of Antwerp from 1976 to 1985, where he earned his PhD in social political sciences in 1983. Since 1985, he has been employed in the Netherlands, first as a lecturer at Rijkshogeschool IJsselland in Deventer, and later joined the Catholic University of Nijmegen in 1988, where he became an associate professor and then a full professor in 1994. His research focuses on the social political aspects of environmental issues, investigating societal responses that provoke political issues related to democratic participation, environmental (in)equality, and the interactions of power. He analyzes the role of (scientific) knowledge in new decision-making approaches and policy implementation. His work also involves the continuous renewal of environmental politics within comprehensive trends like regionalization, Europeanization, and globalization, utilizing comparative research to understand the mechanisms of institutional change.
