Professor Dr. Pieter Van Wesemael

Biography

Pieter van Wesemael is a professor of Urbanism at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), leading a chair focused on systems-based transition science in urbanism and transformative professional practices. His research aims to understand and shape evolving cities to address critical environmental, social, and economic challenges, with a particular emphasis on adapting existing urban areas through socio-technical innovations. Van Wesemael's work investigates urban form and material expressions across various scales, including building typologies, neighborhoods, and regions, all while analyzing the interplay of social, economic, and environmental systems over historical time. The methodologies employed in his research include mixed methods, qualitative ethnography, and the use of digital technologies such as GIS and VR. His agenda also addresses pressing issues in the Metropolitan Region of Eindhoven related to affordable housing, sustainable transport, and circular food systems. Van Wesemael collaborates extensively with stakeholders in the Quadruple Helix governance model to develop innovative solutions that benefit society. He also organizes Urban Lab programs for hands-on research and teaching.
