Biography

Pilar Nogues-Marco holds a PhD in Economics (International Finance) from Sciences Po Paris. She is a Full Professor of Economic History at the University of Geneva, affiliated with the Department of History, Economics, and Society, as well as the Paul Bairoch Institute of Economic History. Her research explores monetary and financial history from the early modern period to the present, with a particular expertise in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. She studies the genesis of modern financial capitalism, focusing on the functioning of monetary systems and the formation and development of financial markets from a global perspective. Recent works on colonial extraction, capital flows, and intercontinental trade contribute to renewing the understanding of the historical dynamics of financial capitalism. Nogues-Marco collaborates as a consultant with the Bank of Spain and leads a Bank of Spain-funded project titled 'Monetary Systems and Monetary Policies in Historical Perspective: Insights from the Spanish Case' (2024–2027). She is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research and a member of the Bank for International Settlements' Historical Monetary and Financial Statistics group. Her research interests encompass Financial Development, Monetary Systems, Globalization, and Capitalism.
