Biography

Ping Xiao currently holds the Rolls-Royce/Royal Academy Engineering Research Chair in Advanced Coating Technology at the University of Manchester's Materials Science Centre. He joined the University in 2001 and has since progressed from Lecturer to Professor. He received his DPhil in Materials Science from Oxford University in 1989 and has held positions at Brunel University as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer. His research focuses on the fundamental study of degradation mechanisms of ceramic coatings and the development of novel manufacturing techniques for ceramic matrix composites. With over 300 publications, he has been recognized as one of the top 2% of cited researchers worldwide. Ping Xiao has been actively involved with the UK Government's BEIS and serves as the UK representative on the Generation IV Nuclear Reactor International Forum, emphasizing his commitment to advancing the field of ceramic materials. In 2022, he became editor of the Journal of the European Ceramic Society and received the Tom Bell Surface Engineering Medal in 2024 for his contributions.
