Biography

Piotr Bojakowski earned his PhD in Anthropology in 2012 and joined Texas A&M University’s Anthropology Department in 2022. He specializes in early modern nautical underwater archaeology, shipbuilding hull reconstruction, and material culture studies through artifacts, focusing on maritime history in the Atlantic World during the 16th to 18th centuries. His research employs GIS, remote sensing technologies, laser scanning, 3D modeling, data visualization, and geophysical data acquired through drones and AUVs. Dr. Bojakowski focuses on historical conflict archaeology related to battlefields and underwater terrestrial sites, particularly associated with unaccounted-for service members. He directs the J. Richard Steffy Ship Reconstruction Laboratory, a premier research facility in Texas A&M’s Nautical Archaeology Program, and has participated in numerous surveys, excavations, and field research projects across Northern Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, Africa, North America, and Southeast Asia. His current research involves significant projects like the survey of the Cape Ratac Wreck off Croatia, which aims to analyze and excavate a historically significant shipwreck site, and the Warwick Project, an extensive collaboration that explores post-medieval seafaring and technological transformation in the Atlantic World.
