Biography

Polina Bayvel received BSc (Eng) and PhD degrees in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the University of London, UK, in 1986 and 1990, respectively. She conducted her postdoctoral research at the Fiber Optics Laboratory of the General Physics Institute in Moscow under a Royal Society Postdoctoral Exchange Fellowship. She has worked as a Principal Systems Engineer at STC Submarine Systems Ltd and Nortel Networks, focusing on the design and planning of optical fiber transmission networks. Bayvel has held the Royal Society University Research Fellowship and has been a professor at University College London since 2002. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Optical Society of America. Among her numerous awards, she received the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award from 2007-2012, the IEEE Photonics Society Engineering Achievement Award in 2013, and several honors in 2023 and 2024, including the Royal Society Rumford Medal and the Humboldt Research Prize. Her research interests include intelligent optical networks and the development of advanced communication technologies.
