Dr. Pradeep Mutalik

Biography

Pradeep Mutalik is a medical scientist at Yale University School of Medicine with over 35 years of experience in the field. He completed his MD in Neurophysiology from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India, in 1982 and became a junior faculty member in 1986. Since then, he has worked extensively at Yale, initially as a post-doctoral student in pain research and later at the Yale Center for Medical Research from 1989 to 2007. He served as a faculty member in the Radiology Department, focusing on the transition to digital technology and directing imaging clinical trials. Dr. Mutalik is known for his pioneering work in negation detection within electronic medical records in the early 2000s. In 2011, he became affiliated with the West Haven VA Medical Center, where he directed a remote primary care education program. Currently, he is involved in clinical data mining and virtual trial emulation at the Clinical Epidemiological Research Center, utilizing VA's extensive electronic medical records. His main research interest lies in employing focused natural language processing (NLP) to retrieve accurate, clinically relevant data from EMRs, and he has developed rapid validation methods for this purpose. Over his career, Dr. Mutalik has published research in various domains, including neurophysiology, clinical informatics, expert systems, and medical education. He also writes popular science articles for Quanta magazine.
