Biography

Praveen K. Jain received his PhD from the University of Toronto in 1987. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Queen's University and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Power Electronics. He serves as the Director of the Centre for Energy and Power Electronics Research at Queen's University. Dr. Jain has made pioneering contributions in the field of resonant power conversion technology and has significantly influenced telecommunications during his tenure at Nortel in the 1990s. His key contributions include the design and development of high-frequency power conversion equipment for the International Space Station in the late 1980s. With over 35 years of experience, he has provided substantial contributions to both the theory and practice of power electronics, and has extensive consulting experience with industry. Dr. Jain is also a founder of successful start-up companies such as CHiL Semiconductor, which specializes in digital power controllers, and SPARQ Systems, known for photovoltaic micro-inverters. He has supervised more than 100 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the field of power electronics and has published over 600 academic papers and holds 100 patents. He has received numerous accolades, including the 2021 IEEE Medal for Power Engineering and the 2017 IEEE Canada Electric Power Medal.
