Biography

Priti Narayan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She holds a PhD from Rutgers State University of New Jersey (2019) and has a prolific research focus on urban processes and politics in India. Her work is particularly interested in themes of urban dispossession, belonging, informality, and the politics of knowledge production. Utilizing ethnographic and archival methods, Narayan's research highlights the struggles for tenure security in Chennai and aims to narrate the histories of women activists within urban settings. Through collaborative activist scholarship, she seeks to emphasize the importance of lived experiences among working-class activists and residents in scholarly conversations surrounding social movements. At UBC, she teaches courses focused on urbanization in the Global South, anti-colonial theory, and community-engaged research. Prior to her position at UBC, Narayan was a postdoctoral fellow with the Princeton Mellon Initiative in Architecture, Urbanism, and Humanities at Princeton University.
