Biography

Professor Qi (Tony) Dong's overarching research goal is to develop innovative chemical processes and materials to address pressing challenges in energy, environment, and sustainability. He is particularly driven by the urgency of the global waste accumulation and resource scarcity, as well as the need for transformative intelligent manufacturing solutions. His lab focuses on harnessing novel dynamic non-equilibrium processes and advancing a broad spectrum of electrothermal and electrochemical techniques for chemical synthesis and material upcycling. His research interests include plastic upcycling and biomass valorization, where he investigates the use of electrified techniques to valorize plastic waste and design efficient heterogeneous catalysts to modify reactivity of macromolecular species. Dong is also interested in dynamic non-equilibrium thermochemical synthesis, exploring combined reactor designs to synthesize value-added chemicals from abundant feedstocks like methane and nitrogen. He addresses the growing demand for critical minerals used in lithium batteries through electrified pyrometallurgy and electrometallurgy, aiming for effective recovery methods for lithium and selective separation of transition metals.
