Qi Liu holds a BEng in mineral processing from China and a MASc and PhD from the University of British Columbia. He worked at Wuhan University of Technology and Process Research Associates Limited before joining the University of Alberta in 1998. He was a professor in the materials engineering department and held the Ron Nolan/Hatch Chair in Sustainable Energy Mineral Processing Technologies from 2009 to 2021, as well as the Glencore Chair in Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering. His research areas encompass mineral separation, solid-liquid separation, and metal ion separation, with a focus on critical minerals and energy minerals. His current research interests include homo-aggregation flotation, novel process separation of fine and ultrafine mineral particles, bitumen extraction and enrichment from oil sands, and the dewatering of oil sands tailings using coagulation, flocculation, and filtration techniques. Liu also explores utilizing magnetic sorbents for metal ion separation through magnetic separation techniques.
