Biography

Qingfei Yin is an Associate Professor in the Department of International History at the London School of Economics. Her research centers on contemporary China and inter-Asian relations, specifically focusing on China’s relationships with its Asian neighbors during the Cold War period. She is particularly interested in how the global Cold War influenced state-building projects in Asia. Her book, 'State Building in Cold War Asia: Comrades and Competitors at the Sino-Vietnamese Border' (Cambridge University Press, 2024), offers a new perspective on the complex and changing relations between China and Vietnam, examined against the backdrop of international, national, and local historical contexts. She is currently engaged in several book projects, including one on Chinese seamen during the Cold War and the development of China’s ocean shipping in the Mao era. Yin's research is supported by the Association for Asian Studies, the China Inner Asia Council, and the Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Program for China Studies. A recipient of the LSE Excellence in Education Award, she is dedicated to both scholarship and teaching, having served as Book Review Editor for the Journal of Military History and on the Editorial Board for Cold War History. Qingfei holds a PhD in History from George Washington University and completed the LSE-Peking University Double MSc in International Affairs.
