R. Gary Parker is Professor Emeritus at the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. He joined the faculty in January 1972 and retired at the end of 2011. His research and teaching interests primarily focus on discrete combinatorial optimization, with specific interests in graph theory and graph algorithms. He has published extensively in leading journals such as Discrete Mathematics, Algorithmica, Networks, and Discrete Applied Mathematics. Parker has authored graduate-level textbooks, including 'Discrete Optimization' and 'Deterministic Scheduling Theory'. In the late 1980s, he was one of the original founders of the elite, interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization (ACO), which is jointly sponsored by the College of Computing and the School of Mathematics. In 1996, he was named Associate Chair for Graduate Studies in the Stewart School, a position he held until retirement, and also served as Graduate Chair, where he created an independent Ph.D. program in Operations Research.
