Biography

R. Alan Plumb is a prominent atmospheric scientist and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He specializes in atmospheric dynamics, focusing on the troposphere and stratosphere's global distribution of trace gases. His research has made fundamental contributions to understanding wave-mean flow interactions within the atmosphere and has broad relevance in the application of atmospheric phenomena, including the quasi-biennial oscillation. Plumb has developed rigorous theoretical frameworks for interpreting tracer-tracer diagrams and “age of air” diagnostics derived from both observations and numerical models pertaining to the stratosphere. His work has advanced the comprehension of transport barriers and the polar vortex edge, as well as the theory of tropospheric Hadley circulations and monsoons. Since joining MIT's faculty in 1988, he chaired the EAPS Program in Atmospheres, Oceans, and Climate from 2003 to 2008, contributing significantly to the field of atmospheric research.
