Biography

Dr. R Graham Barr is a distinguished faculty member at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, holding the position of Hamilton Southworth Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology. His research primarily focuses on respiratory epidemiology, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema. With an emphasis on understanding the underlying causes of emphysema and the subtypes of COPD, Dr. Barr utilizes machine learning techniques to integrate advanced imaging modalities such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) along with multi-omic measures from large cohorts. He serves as the principal investigator for major studies, including the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Lung Study, which is the longest-running prospective study of emphysema utilizing CT imaging. His expertise also extends to important cardiopulmonary studies employing advanced echocardiography and MRI technologies. Outside of his academic pursuits, Dr. Barr actively participates in local health initiatives, evaluating the cost-effectiveness of tuberculosis treatment strategies and analyzing urban health issues related to poverty and asthma. He is multilingual, speaking both French and Spanish, which allows him to communicate effectively in diverse settings.
