Biography

R Stuart Geiger studies the relationships between science, technology, and society, focusing particularly on the substantial impacts these have on social institutions. His research addresses issues of fairness, accountability, transparency, and responsibility in machine learning, with a specific interest in online content moderation. Geiger has examined the values and biases embedded in technologies and how communities make decisions regarding their use. He investigates the development of data science as an academic and professional field, alongside his interests in sustainability and free/open-source software. Geiger also contributes to scientific cyberinfrastructure projects. He earned his Ph.D. in 2015 from the UC Berkeley School of Information and the Berkeley Center for New Media, where he worked as a staff ethnographer at the UC Berkeley Institute of Data Science. In 2020, he joined UC San Diego as an Assistant Professor, with a joint appointment in the Department of Communication. His methodological approach is pluralistic, collaborating across various fields including communication and media studies, science and technology studies, cultural anthropology, organizational sociology, and the history and philosophy of science.
