Biography

René Bindels is a physiologist focused on the regulation of ion transport processes in the kidney and small intestine, linking health and disease. His current projects investigate molecular mechanisms that control calcium and magnesium balance as well as the regulation of novel families of epithelial calcium and magnesium channels, specifically TRPV5, TRPV6, TRPM6, and TRPM7. He also studies the functional consequences of mutations in human transporters such as ROMK2, NKCC2, NCC, and TRPM6, which are implicated in Bartter and Gitelman syndromes, inherited forms of hypomagnesemia. His research utilizes established epithelial cell lines, tissue-specific knockout mouse models, and combines electrophysiological and biochemical analyses of channel activity. René is responsible for physiology courses for medical and health science students and has held various prestigious positions, including elected member of Academia Europaea. He has received numerous awards, including the Robert Pitts Lectureship from the International Union of Physiological Sciences and the Homer Smith Award from the American Society of Nephrology. In 2010, he became the scientific director of the Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (RIMLS) and leads the Renal Disorders Research group.
