Biography

R Sean Sanders is an award-winning educator and researcher whose scientific interests intersect with the environmental aspects of resource extraction. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1990 from the University of Saskatchewan and completed his PhD at the University of Alberta. Before joining the University of Alberta in 2006, Sanders spent nine years at Syncrude Canada Ltd., holding various technical leadership positions in the company's Research Operations divisions. In 1997, he conducted research to develop improved oil sands extraction processes designed to recover bitumen while minimizing water consumption and operating at lower temperatures. Notably, Sanders was part of the team that commercialized Syncrude’s Low Energy Extraction process. Following his appointment at the University, he received the Faculty of Engineering Undergraduate Teaching Award and the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. His research interests have led to the establishment of an NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Pipeline Transport Processes, a multimillion-dollar collaboration involving the university, industry, and government agencies. His current research focuses on exploratory studies of pipeline transport processes and makes significant contributions to the understanding of multiphase transport.
