Dr. R Wilson

Biography

R J Wilson is a distinguished professor in the Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies at the University of British Columbia. He has a rich educational background, having earned a BA in Literae Humaniores from Oxford in 1971, followed by an MA from Oxford in 1974 and another MA from Dublin the same year. He obtained his DPhil from Oxford in 1977. His career began at Trinity College Dublin, where he served as a Junior Lecturer and later as an Associate Professor from 1974 to 1994. Subsequently, he was a Professor of Archaeology at the University of Nottingham until 2005 before joining UBC. Since 2008, he has directed the Centre for the Study of Ancient Sicily. His research interests predominantly focus on the archaeology of Roman and early Byzantine Sicily, encompassing history, architecture, and the artifacts of the Western Greeks and Roman North Africa. He has led various archaeological projects, including studies on settlements, trade, and agricultural practices in ancient Sicily, contributing significantly to the field through numerous publications and lectures internationally. His work has been recognized with multiple awards, including fellowships at prestigious institutions such as the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Society of Canada.
