Biography

Rabindra Bhattacharjee is an Assistant Professor at Western University in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. His research primarily focuses on drug repositioning, organ preservation, transplant immunity, and ischemia-reperfusion injury. He investigates the role of innate immune receptor Toll-like receptors in pro-inflammatory responses that are triggered during ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), especially concerning transplantation. His laboratory has successfully developed multiple models of kidney IRI involving mice, pigs, and human samples to explore intervention strategies that could prevent subsequent damage. The overarching goal of his research is to identify novel organ preservation methods that can protect organs from damage before transplantation, thus promoting optimal function after transplantation. He is working towards elucidating specific immune signaling pathways to reposition existing drugs aimed at preventing IRI-induced inflammation, ultimately developing treatment options that ensure prolonged graft survival and improve the quality of life for transplant patients.
