Biography

Rachel Cristy studied linguistics and philosophy separately, and she holds a PhD in Philosophy from Stanford University. Her dissertation focused on Nietzsche and William James’s critiques of scientism. She joined King’s College London in 2019 after holding a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto Centre for Ethics. Rachel’s research interests include Nineteenth-Century Philosophy, particularly the works of Nietzsche and American Pragmatism, as well as Kant’s epistemology and aesthetics. Her focus is on the history of late modern philosophy beginning with Kant, tracing the influence of early neo-Kantianism through late 19th-century figures often referred to as successors of Kant, including Nietzsche and American Pragmatists like William James. She is especially interested in how late modern philosophers engage with science, exploring their epistemological views concerning methods and limitations, as well as the philosophical foundations necessary for understanding the ethical implications of science in individual and societal contexts. Rachel teaches courses on Nineteenth-Century Philosophy, Aesthetics, Philosophy and Art, Philosophy of Race, and Philosophy of Gender.
