Biography

Rachel yacaaʔał George (nucuńał Ahousaht Ehattesaht Nations) is an Assistant Professor in Indigenous Studies at the University of Victoria. She holds a BA in History and English and a PhD in Indigenous Governance from the University of Victoria as well as an MA in Genocide Studies from the University of Amsterdam. Her research primarily focuses on Indigenous politics, reconciliation, justice, and pathways to decolonization, particularly through the lens of Indigenous stories that inform the work of truth and reconciliation commissions in Canada and the United States. Before her doctoral studies, she served as a Research Coordinator for the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth Reconciliation Commission. Her areas of expertise include Indigenous coastal governance, Indigenous relationality, and Indigenous resurgence. Rachel’s scholarly contributions include a variety of publications that examine the intersections of justice, reconciliation, and Indigenous resilience.
