Rachel Muers joined the University of Edinburgh in 2022 as the first woman appointed to the historic Chair of Divinity. She is a theologian focused on listening to and speaking across disciplinary, confessional, and institutional boundaries. Muers has a background in the history of Christian theology, particularly in the twentieth century, and is engaged in developing new theological responses to urgent societal questions. She studied at the University of Cambridge, earning her BA in 1997, MPhil in 1998, and PhD in 2002. She served as a Margaret Smith Research Fellow at Girton College, Cambridge from 2001 to 2003, and was a lecturer at the University of Exeter from 2003 to 2007, and then a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds, where she received a personal chair in 2018. Currently, she is the President of the Society for the Study of Theology and a member of the World Council of Churches Faith and Order Commission.
