Biography

Rachel Price (B.A., Yale; Ph.D., Duke University) specializes in Latin American and circum-Atlantic literature, with a particular focus on Cuban culture. Her essays examine a wide range of topics including media, slavery, poetics, environmental humanities, and visual art. Price is currently engaged in a book-length study detailing media representations of slavery and anti-slavery insurgency in nineteenth-century Cuba. Her work includes 'The Object Atlantic: Concrete Aesthetics in Cuba, Brazil, and Spain (1868-1968)', which investigates the shift away from sovereignty concerns towards materiality in Iberian Atlantic literature and art. This book also reveals how mid-century movements like concrete poetry and neoconcrete art incorporated global forms of constructivism shaped by slavery and empire. Furthermore, her book 'Planet/Cuba: Art, Culture, and the Future Island' discusses contemporary Cuban art and literature against a backdrop of global pressures, addressing themes like climate change and pervasive surveillance. Additionally, Price co-edited 'Ángel Loureiro: El populismo por venir?' and has taught at prestigious institutions including Brown University and Stony Brook University, while working with the Social Science Research Council's Program on Latin America. She is a core member of the Program in Media and Modernity at Princeton and has contributed significantly to the academic community at Princeton University.
