Biography

The Zwick laboratory studies the natural programs that regenerate adult tissues throughout life. Her research has defined the molecular and spatial patterns that organize metabolism in the lengths of the mouse and human small intestine and introduced strategies to track changes in this organization in response to various stimuli. By investigating these emerging patterns, the lab explores their therapeutic applications in regenerative medicine, as well as the regional mechanisms that underlie organ adaptation to meet physiological demands. Dr. Zwick is particularly interested in pregnancy, which represents a developmental window during which significant changes occur in virtually every tissue of the maternal body. While the central roles of the uterus and mammary gland in this process are well established, there remains a lack of fundamental knowledge regarding the specific cellular changes that occur at these sites and how they affect both short- and long-term maternal health. A major goal of the Zwick lab is to identify the unique aspects of the pregnant body that stimulate adult stem cells, driving the remodeling of digestive organs to support maternal physiology and contribute to tissue development.
