Biography

Rachelle Buchbinder is an Australian NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow and a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at Monash University. She has held the position of Director of the Monash Department of Clinical Epidemiology since its inception in 2001. With a background as a rheumatologist and clinical epidemiologist, Buchbinder leads a broad range of multidisciplinary projects focused on arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions. Her prominent roles include being the Coordinating Editor of the Cochrane Musculoskeletal group and the Chair of the Australian Rheumatology Association Database (ARAD) Management Committee. She is a founding member and Chair of the Executive Committee for the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence for the Australia and New Zealand Musculoskeletal Clinical Trials Network (ANZMUSC). In 2018, she chaired the steering group for the Lancet Low Back Pain Series, which highlighted strategies to alleviate the increasing burden of low back pain. Her current research program, funded by NHMRC schemes, emphasizes reducing inappropriate overdiagnosis and overtreatment in musculoskeletal care and improving health service delivery models. Buchbinder’s extensive contributions to the field also involve developing decision aids and improving health literacy for patients with inflammatory arthritis.
