Biography

Raf de Bont holds the chair in History of Science and Environment at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He served as the Chair of the History Department from 2021 to 2024 and is currently the Vice-Dean for Research. De Bont studied History at the University of Leuven and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 2005, he earned his doctoral degree with a thesis focused on the reception of evolution theory in Belgium. Prior to his current role at Maastricht University, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Leuven and held visiting fellowships at Cambridge University and Imperial College London. His research addresses themes such as Human-Animal Relations, History of Ecology, International Organizations, Globalization, Scientific Fieldwork, and Evolutionary Theory.
