Biography

Rafael Grohmann is an Assistant Professor of Media Studies (Critical Platform Studies) at the University of Toronto. He is a research associate at the University of Oxford and the founding editor of the journal Platforms & Society. His research focuses on digital labor, AI work, the cultural sector, workers’ organizing, platform cooperativism, and the digital solidarity economy, with a special emphasis on Latin America. Grohmann is currently working on a book manuscript examining how worker collectives are failing to govern platforms. He co-leads the Creative Labour Critical Futures (CLCF) project and is a Faculty Affiliate at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society. He also serves as a Senior Fellow at Massey College and is an Advisory Board Member of the Centre for Culture & Technology. Additionally, he is a researcher at the AI Policy Observatory and has affiliations with the Weizenbaum Institute in Germany and the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Grohmann has published in renowned academic outlets, including Big Data & Society, New Media & Society, and the International Journal of Communication. He is also an editorial board member for both Communication, Culture & Critique and Big Data & Society.
