Biography

José Rafael Moneo is a prominent architect and educator who has held the position of Josep Lluis Sert Professor of Architecture, Emeritus at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Since joining the Graduate School of Design, Moneo has taught various courses on Contemporary Architecture and Design Theories. His academic endeavors have led him to teach in Barcelona and Madrid, and he has been a fellow at the Spanish Academy in Rome. Moneo's scholarly contributions include numerous published articles and lectures around the world. His notable architectural projects include the Bankinter Building in Madrid, the Museum of Roman Art in Mérida, the L’Illa building in Barcelona, the Pilar Joan Miró Museum in Palma de Mallorca, the Kursaal Auditorium and Congress Center in San Sebastián, the extension of the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Davis Art Museum at Wellesley College, and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Gold Medal from the Spanish government, the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Prince Viana Prize in Spain, and the Swedish Schock Prize for Visual Arts from the Royal Institute of British Architects. In 1996, Moneo was honored with the UIA Gold Medal and the Pritzker Prize, solidifying his reputation in the field of architecture.
