Rafael Pinedo Villanueva is an Associate Professor and Senior Health Economist at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences at the University of Oxford. His research primarily focuses on understanding the healthcare interventions for various diseases, particularly musculoskeletal conditions. His work addresses critical questions about how healthcare systems make decisions regarding the allocation of limited resources and the impact of diseases on people's quality of life. Pinedo Villanueva is particularly interested in osteoporosis, fracture prevention, osteoarthritis, and rare musculoskeletal diseases such as osteogenesis imperfecta and X-linked hypophosphatemia. He employs real-world evidence derived from routinely collected data to analyze the healthcare journeys of individuals with these conditions, examining the associated costs and quality of life implications. His collaborative research involves partnerships with medical professionals, statisticians, and other health experts to develop economic models that inform healthcare decision-making.
