Biography

Rafael Ruiz de Castañeda is a lecturer and researcher at the Institute of Global Health at the University of Geneva. He has an interdisciplinary international background focusing on the interface of wild animal ecology and veterinary microbiology. He possesses significant field laboratory experience in screening wild avian populations for the presence of potentially pathogenic zoonotic bacteria such as Enterobacteria and parasites like avian malaria. His current research interests lie in the extended concept of Health / Eco-Health approaches within the context of global health challenges, including emerging infectious diseases and conservation opportunities concerning biodiversity and health promotion at the human-animal-ecosystem interface. With extensive personal experiences in Africa, he has collaborated on various innovative health education projects aimed at developing emerging countries in Africa and Latin America, including notable EU-funded initiatives. He is also involved in the production of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in Global Health at the Faculty of Medicine and is currently directing a collaborative project with the Institut Pasteur focused on Global Health and the Human-Animal-Ecosystem Interface.
