Biography

Rafael Santos is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Guelph, having joined in 2017. He earned his PhD from KU Leuven, Belgium, in 2013. His research focuses on water and solid waste treatment, environmental remediation, applied mineralogy, geochemistry, and carbon dioxide sequestration. He works on transforming waste materials into valuable products and carbon sinks, including converting steelmaking slags into paper fillers and incineration ashes into adsorbents. Santos's goal is to reduce the environmental impact of industrial activities, contributing to sustainable development. He is currently exploring new reactor technologies and processing routes that minimize energy consumption and hazardous substances. His work includes experimenting with ultrasound to speed reactions, and using tubular reactors to control product properties. His research also involves CO2 capture and utilization, and he has conducted considerable studies on CO2 sequestration from industrial emissions through mineral carbonation. In addition, he examines strategies for the valorization of industrial agricultural solid wastes to extract metals and reduce environmental impacts. Santos is a Fellow of Scialog: Negative Emissions Science and serves on the editorial boards of several journals. He has received grants including the NSERC Discovery Grant Launch Supplement and Ontario Ministry Research Innovation funding for low carbon innovation.
