Biography

Raffaele Ferrari is a physical oceanographer who joined the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) at MIT in 2002. He earned his BS and MS in physics from the University of Turin in 1994 and then pursued PhD studies in fluid dynamics and oceanography at Politecnico di Torino, later continuing his doctoral work at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Before arriving at MIT, he was a postdoctoral scholar at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. His research focuses on the complexities of ocean circulation and its interactions with climate, particularly through turbulence, marine biology, and the carbon cycle. Ferrari has led major projects like the Climate Modeling Alliance in collaboration with Caltech and is currently co-director of an interdisciplinary research center. He has received several awards for his contributions to climate science, including the Harald Sverdrup Lecture from the American Geophysical Union in 2022.
