Dr. Rajat Mittal

Biography

Rajat Mittal is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, known for his expertise in computational fluid dynamics. He leads the Flow Physics Computation Lab, where he develops and employs computational methods to model a variety of flows, with a special focus on immersed boundary methods and vortex dominated flows. His research spans biomedical fluid dynamics and biological bioinspired locomotion, including active flow control and fluid-structure interaction. Mittal extensively collaborates with researchers across disciplines such as zoology, cardiology, robotics, and biomechanics. His impactful work in computational fluid mechanics and computational biomechanics has received funding from prestigious organizations including the National Institutes of Health and NASA. He serves as an associate editor for four peer-reviewed journals. Mittal has worked as a technical consultant for a variety of organizations and has received multiple fellowships and awards in recognition of his contributions to the field, including being named a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.
